Influence of larval prey availability on year class strength in Faroe Plateau cod (Gadus morhua)

چکیده

Abstract Recruitment to the Faroe Plateau cod ( Gadus morhua ) stock (62°N, 6.8°W) is highly variable between years, and availability of suitable prey during early life stages may determine year class strength. Here we first investigate interannual variability in recruitment (1983–2017) based on survey data from assessments. Positive relationships spawning biomass larval abundance juvenile at 1 were detected. However, relationship was not statistically significant, indicating survival larval/early stages. We then investigated if food could explain using an 8-year long time series gut content. Feeding stage, present pre-bloom, relatively stable years. large feeding stage When mean length high, juveniles clearly had less their guts. This contradiction suggested be due intense grazing pressure zooplankton high abundances. years with coincided when phytoplankton spring bloom intense, suggesting that production determines growth this dependent characteristics.

Effects of ocean acidification on the calcification of otoliths of larval Atlantic cod Gadus morhua

The growth and development of the aragonitic CaCO3 otoliths of teleost fish could be vulnerable to processes resulting from ocean acidification. The potential effects of an increase in atmospheric CO2 on the calcification of the otoliths were investigated by rearing Atlantic cod Gadus morhua L. larvae in 3 pCO2 concentrations — control (370 μatm), medium (1800 μatm) and high (4200 μatm) — from ...

Click sounds produced by cod (Gadus morhua).

Conspicuous sonic click sounds were recorded in the presence of cod (Gadus morhua), together with either harp seals (Pagophilus groenlandicus), hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) or a human diver in a pool. Similar sounds were never recorded in the presence of salmon (Salmo salar) together with either seal species, or from either seal or fish species when kept separately in the pool. It is conc...

Effects of turbidity on the spontaneous and prey-searching activity of juvenile Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua).

Increasing turbidity in coastal waters in the North Atlantic and adjacent seas has raised concerns about impacts on Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) using these areas as nurseries. A previous experiment (Meager et al. 2005 Can. J. Fish. Aquat. Sci. 62, 1978-1984) has shown that turbidity (up to 28 beam attenuation m-1) had little effect on the foraging rate of juvenile cod. Although this was attribu...

Hormonal effects of C4-C7 alkylphenols on cod (Gadus morhua)

Foreword There is a great need for more knowledge of the effects on the marine environment of discharges to the sea from the offshore oil and gas industry. The long-term effects in particular are of great interest, as we know very little about them. More knowledge is thus essential if the authorities are to be able to control the development of this sector and to coordinate the exploitation of ...

Modeling growth of larval cod (Gadus morhua) in large-scale seasonal and latitudinal environmental gradients

Spawning of Northeast Arctic (NA) cod stretches from late February to early May over 1500km along the Norwegian coast. Hatching occurs from late March to late May, a period when the number of daylight hours increases from 11 to 17. Larval feeding opportunities are constrained by prey abundance and environmental variables such as light, while temperature determines the maximum growth potential. ...
